What is Anaerobic Digestion?

Anaerobic digestion is a biological process where microorganisms break down organic waste in an oxygen-free environment, producing biogas and renewable energy.

How the Facility Works

The facility operates through a controlled, multi-stage process designed to safely convert organic waste into valuable resources. Each stage plays a specific role, from initial delivery and preparation of materials to biological treatment and energy recovery. Together, these steps ensure efficient waste management, renewable energy production, and the recovery of useful byproducts in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way.

Collection

Organic waste is delivered to the facility from residential, commercial, and municipal sources. This includes food scraps, yard trimmings, and other compostable materials that are diverted from landfill to support sustainable waste management.

Sorting & Preparation

Once received, materials are carefully sorted to remove non-organic contaminants. The remaining organic fraction is then prepared and conditioned to ensure it is suitable for efficient processing in the anaerobic digestion system.

Anaerobic Digestion

The prepared organic waste is placed into sealed, oxygen-free digesters where naturally occurring microorganisms break it down. This controlled biological process converts the material into biogas and digestate.

Energy Production

The biogas produced during digestion is captured and refined to generate renewable energy. This energy can be used for electricity production, renewable fuel, or other sustainable applications, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Resource Recovery

The remaining digestate is processed into a nutrient-rich material that can be reused as a soil amendment or further refined. This completes the circular process by returning valuable resources back into productive use.
